[Central-Electronics] VFO for 10B and 20A

Hi Dave:

Not sure if you have found a VFO yet, but there are generally plenty of
modified BC-458's around that make excellent candidates; no need to butcher
a clean one. Typically, I see several CE style 458s a month on eBay, and
more that just hacked up. Once in a while, you see a CE 458 VFO with the
rare 10M xtal controlled upconverter that they once offered with their kits.
If you take the time to replace all of the passive components; modified
458's can be nearly rock stable.

The Lakeshore is the best of the lot for true Boatanchor VFO's, but hard to
find. The DDS idea is worth considering, but not my personal cup of tea.

Interestingly, the Hallicrafters HA-5 VFO is a basic 5.0 - 5.5 MHz
oscillator; and has possibilities as a CE VFO if the right crystals were
installed in the mixer. The HA-5 is a derivative of the HT-32 and HT-37,
which are also 9 MHz exciters, and use the same basic VFO. A quick look at
the manuals would provide most of the details.

Hope to hear the 20A soon!

I'm now a proud owner of a 20A. Been reading about BC-457/8, CE 458, and
Lakeshore units.
Are these pretty much the most practical options for CE 10/20 transmitters,
or have others successfully used other commerical vintage VFO's? (I did see

the thread about the DDS, too...).

I sure would hate to butcher up a BC-458 just out of principle since the CE
458 and Lakeshore VFOs are rather scarce (anyone have one for sale?).

thanks
