Hi Tisha:
Great to hear about all of the work you've done on the CE gear, and the VFO
in particular. Not sure what you did to restore the filament rectifier, but
I went a step further. After replacing the selenium bridge with a Radio
Shack 25A silicon bridge, I added a 12V zener regulator and now run both the
1626 and 1625 filaments on DC. I can't say for sure how much of a
difference that made as I did a whole bunch of things at the same time, but
the net result is a satisfactory 458 VFO for stability on 75 & 20 M.
73 & keep up the good work,
George - W1LSB

Last year I found a CE 458 on ePay and picked it up for around $90. I was
expecting something that was hacked up, in desperate need of painting.
I was quite surprised, it was an estate sale from someone who did not know
what they really had. The SK who had owned the unit had maintained the unit
in immaculate condition. Because of the poor description on the listing most
ePay lurkers had missed it. I am certain that with a better description it
would have demanded a higher price.
I did have to replace a great many of the components to improve the
stability and it is still no-where near as stable as most any other VFO. Of
course the 20A needed work and the MM-2 was an electrocution hazard.
If you can find one, the factory modded CE 458 is a real treat. Some of the
home-modded BC-458's look terrible and work worse.
