At the time the Slicer was being made, 1/2 watt resistors were 
considerably larger than they are today.  What you are assuming to be 1 
watt resistors may be, in fact, only 1/2 watt resistors.  I've got some 
mil-spec 1/4 watt resistors from that era that are as big as 1 watters.
