I have received a number of replies to my plea for help and want to thank
everybody. It is comforting to know there are others out there who have
already been to where I am about to venture.

Thought I would summarize the suggestions contained in the replies. These
summaries are in no particular order.

1. Eliminate the limiter by removing the module and adding a jumper to its
socket.
2. Replace the limiter batteries with back-to-back diodes or zeeners.
3. Beware of battery corrosion absorbed into the limiter board.
4. Contact Bob Sullivan W0YVA.
5. Obtain a schematic reproduction.
6. Replace fan bearings instead of cleaning and repacking.
7. Replace VCO bearing instead of cleaning and repacking.
8. Replace HV electrolytic capacitors with specials by Nick Tulsa.
9. Contact Nick Tulsa K5EF.
10. Replace all electrolytic capacitors.
11. Procure factory alignment instructions and align using a sweep
generator.
12. Replace four Chemtronix capacitors in modulator.
13. Replace selenium rectifier with solid state device.
14. Rebuild VCO following info at
<http://www.tusaconsulting.com/vfo_recalibration.htm> and
<http://www.isquare.com/personal_pages/ce-pto-rebuild.htm>
15. Obtain alignment instructions from BAMA site at
<http://bama.edebris.com/manuals/ce/>

The above list certainly gives me a good starting point. Hope to take a good
look inside the 100V this weekend to inventory all capacitors which need
replacing. Just for practice, I brought my old HQ-170 out of 40 years of
storage and have nearly competed refurbishment of it. Doesn't really take
too much effort because it was in very good condition to start with. As I
write this, I am wondering to myself if I should stick with the factory
alignment procedure for the HQ-170 or do a modern alignment using network
and spectrum analyzers.
