I agree with the Master Chief. However I will say 390/390A series of Radio
was a great performer for shore installations. Set and forget was the 390 on
shore but not on a ship! The vibrations and shock that a ship bestows on
everything and everyone on board can destroy the finest of Swiss Watches. The
390/390A series have more in common with a washing machine with all that gear
train than a Radio. They should have just kept using the RBB/RBA receivers from
WW-II vintage instead of putting the Collins wonder boxes on board. The boys
in Radio Central were up all night and day wondering if they were going to
miss an important intercept. The R1051 was a much more robust radio and was
designed for ship use. The Criminal North Koreans got a pile of 390A receivers
on the U.S.S. Pueblo and thought they had a bonanza! Not so! Lucky for us the
R1051 was just making it to the fleet then. I'm not eluding that the Chief is
suggesting that a R1051 be used as a receiver for the 100V . I'm sure the
R1051 just won't be much fun with the 100V . Turning those decade knobs is a
pain so that choice is out.
I have a 75A-4 with my 100V. Looks good (knobs match),works good, and is
the same vintage. The A-4 never had a decent transmitter made for it anyway.
The KWS-1 was another Collins cantankerous beast and spent more time getting
repaired than on the air. The 100V/200V was by far one of the best
transmitters ever made during the 50's/60's. Its longevity and lore are a testament to
Wes and his team.
Just a humble opinion, Fire away friends
