[Central-Electronics] Well now I have this CE 10B

Ken,
I agree that going through this old stuff is fun. I never had a 10a, or
10b, but with early 20a's, I learned a thing or two. The carbon resistors
somehow have survived well after 50 years, and most are still within
tolerance. In the 20a various B+ deployments go through 560 ohm resistors
which act as a sacrificial fuse if an overload ever occurred. If the 10B has
these, check them carefully for resistance, and also look for bulging, or
cracks on the body of the resistor. Replace any suspect with the modern type
"flame proof" resistor. The electrolytic capacitors all have to go, as do
the tubular bypass capacitors (they all leak). The Mica bypass capacitors
are usually OK, but I have had some short after using the rig for a
while...taking out a new 560 ohm fuse!
I am very impressed with the new J & J tesla multisection cans. These are
pretty new on the market, and are appearing in new manufacture guitar tube
amps. They offer 100uf + 100uf, 32+32, 50+50 all at @ 500v, and 40+20+20+20
all at 500v. These need a clamp to mount (about $1.50 ea), and the caps cost
about 10 bucks each. I have used some on a recent project, and they work
really well for the size (small), and price. Both Antique, and Angela carry
them. Antique is more costly (last I checked), but Angela has higher
shipping costs, so it's a wash. Both are a pleasure to do business with.
Antique has secure online ordering, and Angela takes a fax. Either can take
a phone order during business hours (Antique is in Arizona, and Angela is on
the east coast). For the 20a, or 10b, the 50-50 mfd at 500 volts is ideal
since today's higher line voltage will really challenge the 450 volt rating
on the stock electrolytics. keep in mind that at 125 vac line voltage, many
boat anchor rigs will run the filaments at about 7 vac instead of 6.3vac.
That's a little hot.

Good luck with that 10B!
Regards,
Jim

Subject: [Central-Electronics] Well now I have this CE 10B
Now that I have completed the resurrection of a Viking II transmitter I have
this lonely
Central Electronics 10B which which has been waiting for several years for
me to get to it. I guess now is the time. The thing works but there are
problems in the modulation section and some undocumented mod's I have to
deal with. It's output is about 6 watts, but when I hook it to my Heathkit
SB200 it raises it to about 70 watts.
This should be fun.
