This is interesting in that you were probably also in the PDX, OR area. I
got the idea from K7GIE, Charlie +ACI-Doc+ACI- Dockhorn (God bless his soul) as he
ran one with a 20A. He was a young Navy doctor stationed at PDX and always
had time for a new ham on SSB. A few years later he was terminal and left
us. I will always remember what a nice person he was.

Hi Rolynn:

I was and am in the Portland area, but got my circuit from CQ in the '50s.
Simplest circuit I ever built - almost. Input to cathodes. Ground all
grids. ARC-5 tank coil (5.3 to 7 mhz, rewound for 75 meters). Chassis was
about 2 1/2 inches wide and the coil and tubes were all lined up in a row.
Power supply had plate meter and just tuned for max output. Drove a three
wire sloping 75 meter vertical from the '55 ARRL Antenna Handbook. Worked
like a dream. Only problem with the 6AG7 tubes was that I could never see
if the plates were red. I obviously did not push them enough because they
lasted for about 2 years until it went on the shelf alongside the retired
Howard receiver and 6AQ5 sandwich box transmitter. I had a number of spare
6AG7 tubes and felt guilty that they sat unused. After reading a mythical
article by Bill Orr about putting the 304TL tubes in an oil bath, I thought
about turning the amp upside down and sticking it in an oil bath to see if I
could get 400 watts out. But, being a high school kid I was still too much
in awe of high power.
