Residents Urged to Use Caution during Heat Wave

SUMMARY:

The National Weather Service has predicted temperatures from today through the weekend to be 100 degrees or higher.  
Due to extremely high temperatures, the Charles County Department of Emergency Services is urging all citizens to 
cancel or reschedule any planned outdoor activities, especially those involving children or the elderly. There is an 
increased risk of heat exhaustion or other heat-related illness for those spending time outdoors for an extended 
period or those without air-conditioning.


The Charles County Commissioners would like to announce that the public buildings listed below will be open during 
regular business hours for use by residents as cooling centers during the extreme heat:  

1)  Capital Clubhouse, 3033 Waldorf Market Place, Waldorf (Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.)

2)  Nanjemoy Community Center, 4375 Port Tobacco Road, Nanjemoy (Open Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)        

3)  The Richard R. Clark Senior Center, 1210 Charles Street, La Plata (Open Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
             
4)  Charles County Public Libraries  (Branches listed below open Friday,1 p.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. - 5p.m.)       
      La Plata Branch, 2 Garrett Ave., La Plata
      P.D. Brown Memorial Branch, 50 Village St., Waldorf 

5)  Outdoor Pools       
      La Plata High School (Friday 12 p.m.-8 p.m., Saturday & Sunday 12 p.m. - 6   p.m.)                  
      McDonough High School (Friday 12 p.m.-8 p.m., Saturday & Sunday 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.)
      Thomas Stone High School (Friday 12 p.m.-8 p.m., Saturday & Sunday 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.) 

6)  Indoor Pools (Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 12 p.m. -5 p.m.)       
      North Point High School 
      Lackey High School   

Fees for indoor and outdoor pools are $5 for ages 13 and older; $4 for youth ages 2-12 and seniors; free for children 
under age 2.  On Heat Advisory, Heat Warning, or Code Red Air Quality Index days, the Dept. of Community Services will 
offer reduced pool admission fees of $2 for all age levels during the hours of 3:00pm-close on weekdays and noon-close 
on weekends.
