Hi All,
Here is my info from the newsletter. As some of this is time sensitive,
I wanted to get this to the masses. Sorry I could not make the recent
Membership Meeting. I was fighting dueling real estate agents (boy, what
a cut-throat industry) and one of those nasty migraines. Sharon once
thought those headaches were caused by my radios bombarding my few brain
cells with RF. Now that she is a ham, she has other thoughts hihi.
Thursday evening, May 1, I traveled to Calvert County for a meeting with
their AR Club. Dennis Bowling and the group welcomed both Joe Boswell
(KB3HNP) and me with plenty of hospitality. We spoke about our efforts
of emergency and organized communications during the La Plata tornado
last year. In turn, the crowd offered their war stories, and it was a
great exchange. It is obvious that both groups are deeply committed to
providing efficient public service. Mr. Don Hall, Calvert County's
Director of Emergency Management, was in attendance, and that prompted a
broad and welcomed sharing of information. Many thanks to Don Hall,
Dennis Bowling and the Calvert Club. I had a great time.
As mentioned in recent meetings with our ARES/RACES Team, we will soon
gather all of our resources, both materiel and expertise, in establishing
a common and standardized packet communications system, whereby we have
portable stations that will all be compatible. Dennis Bowling and I
discussed this topic in recent months, and they too are establishing the
same means and methods, and will soon organize Packet Nets. Isn't that a
great idea? A common goal among us all in Southern Maryland (regionally)
shall be to ensure readiness and compatibility of resources among all
Counties. Our EC/RO, Mike Tackish (KA3GRW) has already begun
spearheading this effort and has planned our packet coordinating meeting
for later in this month. Please see the following schedule of events for
details. Many thanks to Mike for his direction.
I was pleased to meet Ric Creager, KK4GV, at the Calvert Club gathering.
As you know, he was our featured speaker at the Friday CCARC Membership
Meeting. I truly regret missing the meeting, however look forward to
chatting with Ric in the future.
Now starts the input presented earlier in the week.

The nice weather is here, and I feel confident we all want to get out in
the field, set up some contest stations, special event stations, or
simply gather by the grill, talking about amateur radio among friends.
Here is the latest offering of nearing events, and some info on
coordinations
May 1, 2003 (Thursday evening) - Travel to Calvert County to meet with
CARA. Topics of discussion relate to the communications activities for
the La Plata tornado, which occurred exactly one year ago as of this
writing. Several folks plan to attend and offer their interpretations on
how the fast-moving event came together and worked so successfully.
During discussions with Dennis Bowling, N3QHC, of the Calvert County
Club, we have very similar interests, concerns and endeavors for
coordinating emergency communications among our Southern Maryland
Counties. These topics will also be discussed. The meeting begins at
7:30 that evening (Thursday). I will post directions on the reflector on
Tuesday, April 29, 2003. Hope to see a great crowd.
May 2, 2003 (Friday evening) - CCARC Membership Meeting at SMECO Offices,
301 Southbound Lane at intersection with DeMarr Road in White Plains, MD.
Begins at 7:30pm. Guest Speaker is Ric Creager, KK4GV, providing a
presentation titled "Antennas for Military Surveillance and
Electromagnetic Conformance Testing". Ric has one of those ham radio
dream jobs and will gladly share his knowledge with us.
May 4, 2003 - (Sunday) - The Goddard Amateur Radio Club/ AMSAT hosts
meeting covering many topics to include SimSat, ARISS, working the sats,
etc. Begins at 1:00pm at GSFC Visitor's Center. Contact Pat Kilroy,
N8PK for details. Here is a great opportunity to car pool.
May 28, 2003 - (Wednesday) - ARES/RACES Meeting with emphasis on portable
packet stations. 7:00pm at the Training Center Room in the Charles County
Government Building (behind the Courthouse). Anyone with TNCs, laptops,
power supplies, or time, etc. who wish to offer a hand and provide
expertise, all are welcomed. Contact our EC/RO Mike Tackish (KA3GRW) for
details.
June 6, 2003 - (Friday) - CCARC Membership Meeting at Cobb Island, MD to
be held at our usual "set-up" location in preparation for the next day's
Cobb Island Day 2003. The meeting will convene at it usual time of
7:30pm at the Old Cobb Island Filling Station, which is on your right
just after you cross the bridge onto the Island. Any questions as to how
to get there, don't hesitate to call me or any other who has participated
in year's past. All set-ups will be done on this evening, so that when
the sun rises the next morning, we will be OTA. Tom and Deb
(W3TOM/KA3VNF) will spend the night in their CCARC ARK, and watch over
our wares.
June 7, 2003 - (Saturday) - Cobb Island Day 2003 with a full day of
local, national and international contacts. I will soon have our
listings of required items and other commitments out on the reflector.
June 27, 2003 - (Friday) - Field Day 2003 SETUPS. This is typically the
last day before the actual event set aside for erecting tents, antennas,
grills, tables, etc.
June 28 and 29, 2003 - (Saturday and Sunday) - Field Day 2003. This is
our big event of the year. Look for my coordinating bulletins on the
reflectors.
That is it for now. I will be busy these next several months, but I will
not complain. It is what we do.
Many thanks to all and 73
