Hello everyone,
I don't know if anyone is counting the days but Field Day, that premier
amateur event of the year, will rapidly be upon us. We're only about 6 weeks
away. (If this were Christmas I'd just slink lower in my chair, grumble "Bah,
Humbug!" and wish that it were spring.) Anyhow...I'd like to start outlining
some basic duties/responsibilities WITHOUT assigning names. I have an idea of
people that I thought may fit in to certain positions but:
A. I don't want to exclude anyone.
B. I don't want to assign someone to a task they are unwilling to do.
C. I'm waiting for that really highly motivated volunteer to call or
email me saying
"Don't worry, I'll handle everything! (I'm also waiting to win a trip
to Hawaii with
Sandra Bullock.)
While I said at the April meeting that scores don't mean much to me, I would
like to see us put 3 stations on the air this year. One for SSB, one for CW
and a GOTA station for those who might be a little timid about getting on the
air in front of us "Old-Timers". (Never thought of my self as an "old-timer"
until recently when a cute young lady was hired at Blossom Point and I found
out I'd been working there BEFORE she was born. But I digress...)
Here's the BASIC list of areas of major responsibility that I've identified.
W3TOM provided us with a great list of necessary items-and it must be a great
list for as many field days as its been passed along. Here are the areas that
have been identified:
Area Primary
1. Station HF#1-voice
2. Station HF#2-CW Bill (KE3RE) Palmer has volunteered for this
3. GOTA station Art (AA3RT)-I said I'd help with this
4. Generator Tom (W3TOM) has volunteered
5. Grill/cooking (And I promise-no jokes about skinny
cooks this year!)
6. Publicity
7. Computers This is the area where we really came up
short last
year.
Like I said, I have some ideas of who I might like to head some of these
positions but will wait to see if anyone is really enthused about heading up
these areas where there are no names. Please call or email if you have an
urge to help out. And make sure you email or call before the urge goes away!
For those who turned out, last year's Field Day had los of food, fun,
cameraderie and-oh, yeah, we operated radios too!
Seriously, we learned a lot last year about what-and what not-to do. I'm
hoping that this year's Field Day will give everyone another chance to learn
about radio theory, operation, antenna setup, whatever. You might even learn
about some of your fellow club members and find out they're some pretty good
folks :^) .
