Good afternoon to all,
First, let me say that this round of emails is, at least consistent with
past email round robbins. Disappointing, of coarse. Ridiculous,
absolutley. Once again, publicly, versus having a private conversation with
whomever, an email with no good intent was emailed to the entire group.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Lori Hoyt (N2TJO) and also, yes,
spouse of Rob Hoyt (N2OMC). As you may have noticed I am a licensed Ameteur
Radio Operator, who is not a member of any club. Let me give you some
history. My husband was licensed when we married (1988) and just days after
we were married, we moved to Clovis, New Mexico. My husband found the local
radio club (ENMARC) and at that time owned probably close to zero radio
equipment. The men and women of that club not only welcomed my husband and
I (who was probably 30 years younger than the average member), but invited
us into their homes, became surrogate families, and equipped my husband with
more than ample equipment to "tune into the world". The most memorable, Ben
Leutwyler, W5GYT ~ Silent Key. We lived there for just one year. When we
left NM, and moved to the UK, many of these fine hams kept in contact. We
left the UK in 1992, and at that time I spent a few months in NY while Rob
was in Biloxi. During a conversation there was a challenge - that I could
not become licensed. Well, true to my nature, took that challenge and when
my husband came to NY from the end of his schooling, there was the license!
We moved to Charles County, MD 2 weeks later. I expected nothing but
wonderful things from the CCARC.
I will say, that all of the members that I have personally met from the
club have been wonderful and I have enjoyed getting to know them. However,
I am very disgusted with anyone on the email blast list that feels that any
good comes out of the practice of publicly admonishing others. True,
everyone has the right to their own opinion. True, as a group you must do
everything you can to not offend others. However, I can tell you that as a
"volunteer" (this year), PTO President, WSC Soccer Coach, Sunday School
Teacher, Women's Ministries Secretary, and Sunday School Board Member, I
have done my fair share to apparently "offend" others. As a business owner
I definitely offend, and as a Practice Manager - definitely offend! Some
food for thought.... It's easy to offend others when you are "out there
doing it". The reverse of easy to not offend anyone if you aren't doing
anything!
I respect the fact that the Nativity may have been offensive to some. I am
sensitive to that, but am almost certain that the same folks who are
"offended" celebrate Christmas and their homes are decked out with
lights,etc. Let's just call is "Mas" - yes - that's a great idea -let's
leave Christ out of it altogether and then - I am certain the holiday season
would be merry and bright! Does the person or persons who were offended
even know Michelle Sack? If they do, I am certain that they would know
without a doubt that that was her intent. To offend someone with a clipart
of the nativity. She has a lot of spare time between her nursing job and
volunteer positions. This certainly does not even come close to the
definition of Michelle as defined by those who know her. Instead of going
to her privately and pointing it out, we now know that she publicly
apologized for using clipart in a newsletter that NO ONE ELSE HAS
VOLUNTEERED TO COMPILE. Do you think this email made Michelle feel good?
I will not even begin to list all of the controversy's that have been
publicized in this format. (I did find humor in the negative words thrown
around about the improper use of "73". It still makes me laugh. Thank you
for that.) I do know that almost ALL of these volunteers will step down if
others would only STEP UP. I have offered any of my volunteer positions to
anyone who will actually do them. The very people whose names and call
signs are thrown around in haphazard efforts to discourage are the same
people who volunteered in LaPlata after the tornado, at the March of Dimes
Walk America, at the annual Indian Head horse race, at the walks, runsetc
and at the Fair.
Lastly, I have a question. For those of you with children...if your child
publicly put down a classmate who offended them - would that be acceptable
behavior? In our home, we are trying to teach our children that if someone
offends you to go straight to that person. No good can come out of publicly
doing so. Then, and only if then, take ONE other person with you
(preferably an authority figure) and address the issue. It is never
acceptable to do this in a public fashion, nor spread idle gossip. In this
day and age, it also helps ensure the safety of our children. After all the
other person could have a gun, a knife, or any other weapon, and since they
have been publicly embarrassed, some borderline personalities may feel like
they have nothing to lose. I apologize in advance for broadcasting publicly
our lessons, since they do follow the teachings of Christ, (the book of
Matthew). Not intended to offend, simply stating what WE do.
Thank you to all of those who volunteer and do positive things in and for
our community. Can we possibly keep all correspondance in this format
positive? Other professional organizations read this (via cc) and they will
form an incorrect opinion of all members of this club.

To all:
I am saddened to see ANOTHER controversy brewing on the CCARC
reflector.
As far as the illustration in the newsletter, I thought it was tasteful
and innocuous-I'm sorry if anyone took offense to it.
I won't expound-I heartily agree with Don, W4GFQ-he writes more
eloquently than me so there's not much I can add. (Except about the
non-practicing Christian part-the last time I went to a Sunday evening
service La Plata was wiped out by a tornado-I thought someone was trying to
tell me something;-).
I won't be at the Christmas party either, due to work commitments. I
trust that everyone will have a good time and I wish you all a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year.
73, de AA3RT
