[CALV-AUXCOMM] Fwd: [winlink_for_emcomm] WINMOR is Deprecated.

Steve, Very good explaination thank you. My question wasn’t exactly clear and Im sorry for that. I was not referring to VARA system at this time. I understand that VERA is sound card based for HF and VHF, Was not thinking that ARDOP was a similar program, sound card based; not TNC based. I thought ARDOP WINLINK was a protocol similar to Packet Winlink as far as hardware nand expecting to see the Kenwood D710 in the setup as for the Packet Winlink, But it is more like the VARA Winlink protocol using the sound card. So for the Time being I suppose for awhile Packet Winlink will still be in use; maybe pushing 9600 baud in favor of the mostly used 1200 baud (limit on older TNC’s), and that the Gateways will remain; although transition to 9600 soon. I had used a sound card with VHF FM several years ago but it required a third party program in conjunction to RMS express and was buggy. Signal Link usb will have limits in these new protocols.
Thanks for you time, this was kind of a shock to see this email this morning, and as I have seen VARA in the drop down menu I never noticed ARDOP before.

Not sure I exactly understand your question...but the D710 is VHF./UHF. It
has a built-in AX25 TNC for both 1200 and 9600 packet (a nice TNC
actually). So you can use the D710 'regular' packet like you normally have
or you can run VARA FM very easily and actually runs VFM very reliably. VFM
is an audio card mode and requires the use of an external audio card
(Signalink, Master Communications DRA series card, etc.) to work. The audio
card is plugged into the *rear of the rig *into the 6PIN DIN port. A very
simple process. The Signalink will only do narrow band (up to about 12k due
to it's internal transformers but is still leaps and bounds faster than
1200 packet) but other audio cards can allow the D710 to pump data out at
25k. I routinely get 22-25k transfers wideband with a DRA card.

As far as the D710 nothing will change. You can run regular P2P, WInlink,
etc. sessions with it's built in TNC at either 1200 or 9600 via Express as
you always have. The FT-897 nothing will change there either. Simply start
a ARDOP session and ensure it see's the Signalink you have installed; in
and out USB audio card. Minor change but very simple. You can also run Vara
FM with the FT-897 with the Signalink as well. I did with mine and my
FT857D. My FT857D is mounted in my Go Box with a D710G. Both have
Signalinks and run very well.

Basically, the Winmor protocol will not be included one day in an Update of
Winlink Express. Just simply configure ARDOP (if you are talking no cost)
to use your Signalink and you are good to go with ARDOP.

I hope this helps.
