For those trying to get your computer to talk to your old packet TNC, Winlink Express has a built-in "simple terminal" that can be launched from the "HELP" dialog box. It's perfectly adequate to talk to your TNC, set up TNC parameters and for basic packet operations. It can be used as an alternative to HyperTerminal that is no longer part of Windows after Windows XP. If you are familiar with and like HyperTerminal, Jim (K3UGA) found a way to move it from an old XP computer to Windows 7 or Vista. See attached.
The latest version of Winlink Express (previously called RMS Express) can be downloaded at:
http://www.winlink.org/WinlinkExpress
Look for the download link near the bottom of the page.
A reminder ... it's not possible to do a fresh install of Winlink Express on a Windows XP machine. But you should be able to install an earlier version of RMS Express under Windows XP and then have it update to the latest RMS Express. That's the theory anyway, but until someone tries this approach it remains a theory.
Jim found an older version of RMS Express and I also just found a copy of the Version 1.3.0.4 install file if someone would like to test the theory.
But eventually I suspect the Winlink team will "discover" the hole in their auto-update code and change it to refuse updates under unsupported OS's like XP.
