To All ARES Members:

On Saturday, April 5th, I attended the first quarter meeting in
Sterling, Virginia. The major topic of discussion was an upcoming open
house at the Sterling National Weather Service facility where SKYWARN
support is located for the Washington/Baltimore area. The last open
house was in 2012 and both the NWS and the SKYWARN Support Group are
eager to make this one a success by getting the word out. This family
friendly event will be held on Saturday, April 30th (from 0900-1700) and
Sunday, May1st (1200-1700). A number of SKYWARN and ham radio related
activities are being planned to include:



• SKYWARN Basic Classes

• Tours of the facility

• An Amateur Radio event station (set-up by WX4LWX)

• Weather related children's activities, possibly including a Boy Scout
Merit Badge component



While the event is open to the general public, SKYWARN is also
soliciting  support from ARES, CERT, etc. in local jurisdictions. This
might be an excellent opportunity to provide public awareness about the
effectiveness of ham radio operations and support "when all else fails".
