All,

At this time, our plan is to activate Calvert AUXCOM to a standby status at 1400 local Friday afternoon. Please monitor the 146.985 repeater at that time or soon thereafter (once you're finished with your own storm preparations).

"Standby" means we should all monitor the repeater, but a formal net will not be launched at that point.

Our friends in Charles county may also be using 146.985 repeater periodically to augment their simplex communications.

Storm predictions as of 1900 local Thursday predict snow to begin in southern Maryland Friday afternoon and continue with heavy snowfall through Saturday. NOAA predicts a minimum of 5 inches, likely 19 inches, and a maximum of 25 inches total accumulation in Prince Frederick. Somewhat less in the southern part of the county (likely 14; max 19 in Solomons). See http://www.weather.gov/lwx/winter for updates and for other locations.

In southern Maryland, the snow may changes from dry to wet snow which, in combination with winds of 35 - 45 mph, may result in coatings to trees and power lines with the consequent chances of power failures.

Request AUXCOM members be prepared to make snow depth observations which we can then relay to the NWS. See the links below about best practices for measuring snow depth accurately.

Remember that your personal safety and the safety of your family comes first. At this time we have not been asked to deploy by any served agencies, and I do not anticipate any requests for such after the storm begins.

Be safe.
