Subject: Winlink 2000 Training Sessiom
To All ARES Members in the Region V Hospital Area Interested in Winlink's RMS Express Training:
PRGE ARES is sponsoring an Introduction to RMS Express Training Session on Saturday August 24 from 0900 to 1500 at the Fire Services Building 6820 Webster St, Hyattsville, MD (actually located in Landover Hills!!)
The morning session will be devoted to the VHF/UHF side of RMS Express while the afternoon will concentrate on the HF side or WinMOR.
Both sessions will have a presentation followed by a hands on session with your own equipment. For starters, you must bring your VHF radio with small antenna or dummy load, power supply and notebook computer. All Winlink communications will be with and among the students in the class room.
The cables for your radio may be ordered from www.buxcomm.com. There is a cross reference table on their web page, but I find it easier to call them up on the phone and tell them what radio you have and they will tell you what cable you need to interface your radio with a Kantronics KPC3+ TNC. The TNCs will be on loan to you doing the training session. Cost of the cable is about $20.
The second item to buy is the cable that connects the TNC to your laptop. It has a 25 pin male connector on one end and 9 pin female cable connector on the other. Part number is 83-930 and costs $5.19 ea. You can order it from MCM at: www.mcmelectronics.com
Last is the USB serial adapter for the above MCM cable to connect to your laptop. If you already have one, bring it and we'll see how it performs. Now, listen to me. Don't buy a cheap one. . .they won't be reliable. . .I KNOW. . .BEEN THERE. . .DONE THAT. . .GOT THE BAD ONES TO PROVE IT. . .SO SAVE YOUR MONEY!! The one highly recommended by the Winlink Development Team and that I use exclusively is Keyspan, part number USA-19HS. Walmart use to carry them in the store, but now you have to order it online from them. Can't recall the cost. . .maybe $30 or so.
If you are considering a D710, it's a whole different arrangement, with only one unique cable that is sold on ebay. Contact me off line about this set up.
I hope to have WiFi available to access the WL2K site during the sessions.
Now, if you are really serious about this, please let me know so I can make arrangements for A/C extension cords, room size, etc. If you are short on any equipment you need, contact me offline. Lunch on your own with a few fast food places nearby.
I hope you will consider this training.
I'd like to have RSVPs by COB 1 Aug. Limited seating dictates the first 20 who sign up, gets a seat!
There are no manuals to buy, nothing to download nor fees to pay, just tip the instructor if ya learned anything useful!
tnx es 73, de
