"Software defined radios (yes, these are - next time you hook it up to your
laptop watch how many updates are needed or stuff in the back ground) have a
feature embedded where they go "home" to their servers and upload whatever
was put into them, mostly silently.

Several US companies have complained to the Federal government regarding the
Chinese equipment presenting whitepapers and full technical documents
showing that stuff from China has embedded software and that our
communications systems can be compromised at any time. This means simple
amateur radios, routers, signal devices in government and commercial
installations - banking and infrastructure.

It was once said; send a thousand tourists to their beach, by the next day
we will have a thousand grains of their sand thus the keys to their
castles."

Be warned that Chinese radios can become useless for certain roles unless
fully programmed beforehand with tactical frequencies. If one is asked to
change to a tactical channel it nearly impossible to program onsite without
using a computer.
