FYI nowadays check processing is electronic, the only paper part is the
paper you submit for deposit, so a bad check (insufficient funds for
example) is detected in a day or two rather than weeks.  At least that's
true for a major bank like Bank of America or Chase.  You can deposit a
check with an app on your phone and make the whole thing electronic right
away.
