Straight keys made from about 1925 or 1920 had a slightly modified strap connecting the lower contact to the terminal. The modification was a small bent out part called a.bug lip to make it easier to push a wedge plug under it. It appears that many older keys were refitted tith the later straps. I have not been able to find definite information on wedge plugs but think they were developed from an earlier spring plug used on some types of telegraph switchboard. A wedge plug can be used on keys without "bug lips" but it may not give good contact. For instance, a J-38 does not have a lip. A wedge plug can be used but is not convenient.Sent from my Galaxy

Wedges used to be shipped with (most likely Vibroplex) bugs. But they don’t work with for example 1SpeedX keys, Signal Electric keys and prob a few more. They will work with the J37 types and models like it which have the closer contact bar. Nice find. If no one takes it, I’d like it Wayne. Been using bugs since 1968. 73, Howie WB2AWQSent from my iPhone> On May 10, 2025, at 23:25, hwhall--- via Boatanchors <boatanchors at mailman.qth.net> wrote:> > Something I saved from a going out of business surplus store.
