DeOxid is definitely my switch cleaner of choice.  I just use the spray - it doesn't harm the phenolic parts of the switches in my experience.  

If there is a question about a crystal being bad, I'd suggest putting together an oscillator that duplicates the circuit of the 2B and seeing if the crystal in question will oscillate in that.  Try a known good crystal as well.  That should give you positive confirmation about the condition of the crystal.
