Check to see if the Oscillator switch is not on Zero.

Subject: [Boatanchors] Johnson Valiant question...

I use a Valiant (not Valiant II) on AM. If my VFO is not closely zero beat with whoever is transmitting and their signal is weak, I hear a heterodyne.

While in receive mode, the meter in the Valiant’s OSC (oscillator) position reads 10 on the 0 to 25 scale, which is 20 mA. This indicates that the Valiant’s VFO is running, resulting the heterodyne. If I am in one of the crystal positions, there is a zero OSC reading, while in receive mode.

There is a key plugged into the rear apron key jack and the key is open circuit.

I am wondering if this is normal behavior or if there might be a problem in the keying circuit, keeping the VFO operating. If there is a problem in the keying circuit, I will find it.

Rather than dig into this transmitter (I am old and it’s heavy), I would first like to know if there is a problem in the first place.

If anyone on this list has a Valiant, I would be interested and grateful to know if their transmitter exhibited the same behavior (VFO running without being in transmit and key open). All you would have to do is make sure the keying circuit is open, turn on the filaments, be in VFO frequency control and check the OSC position on the meter. If you see what I am seeing, I guess it is what it is.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Gary, KØCX
