I remember some projects that did that, always seemed like a smart idea 
to me.   I like the electronic T/R switch and with boatanchor receivers 
there's no reason for concern,  but it's important to keep in mind the 
fact that it was designed to work with receiver where the input 
structure is the grid of a vacuum tube.   As W8JI explains,  a tube grid 
will not be damaged by the energy present until the T/R switch reduces 
the voltage to a safe level.

That's likely not true for at least some solid-state or SDR receiver 
front-ends.  Additional protection circuitry might be required.
