[Boatanchors] IC-M710 Marine radio for ham use

Bill,

Looking at the Icom specifications, the transmit coverage has gaps, but the receive coverage has none, so it may be possible to modify the transmit circuitry. Another problem is that to the best of my knowledge, all marine transceivers transmit only on USB. I have a Raytheon RAY 152 marine radio that has been modified to transmit on LSB, so if the IC-M710 receives on LSB as well as USB, it may be possible to modify it to transmit on LSB as well. You'll need to look at a service manual matching the version of your rig to assess what would need to be done.

Using a marine transceiver for ham radio work is awkward because there's no tuning knob, so the modifications may be more trouble than they're worth, but that's for you to decide. I use mine mostly for HF nets and 60 meter communications. They're good radios, but without the tuning, transmit and receive flexibility of ham rigs.

I hope this has been helpful.

Bob AD3K

Subject: [Boatanchors] IC-M710 Marine radio for ham use

Guys,
Our club has just received a donation of a nice IC-M710 marine transceiver. Is there a mod to open it up for the ham bands that you know of? I know it is a channelized rig but we are looking at our options.
Thanks In Advance,
Bill N3WM
