Has anyone dived deeply into the bandspread dial mechanism?

I'm bringing an NC-57 back to life. This came with some issues
in the band spread system, the cord driving the dial was broken
and the cord driving the capacitor was mistrung, allowing only
about half rotation.

I've disassembled entire dial mechanism, but have a detail
question about the drive shaft for the bandspread. This is
the shaft that protrudes through the front panel, through
a bushing.

Is there supposed to be a C Clip on this shaft? It appears there
is a groove for one, but is it supposed to be there? There is a
C clip on the corresponding

Looks like restringing the dial cord for the dial will be
an interesting experience. Anyone have any experience here?
