Dear Steve,
decoupling the mains line is certainly a good idea to archive a reasonable condition. The same construction as the W2DU balun but with the mains line inside the ferrite toroids and in the 160m version will surely do a good job. If you can find large toroids, you may build this decoupling coil as a concentrated element. The only one really large ferrite toroids I know are or were made by Ferroxcube, the material code is 4C65 and their outer diameter is 102mm, the inner is some 80mm, their relative permeability is 100 as far as I remember.

Subject: [Boatanchors] RF in the shack
Recently got a "modern" Boat anchor SS linear
working again, only to have it fail due to what I think
was RF coupling to the 220v power line the amp was
running on with about a 600w cw carrier.
The wire length for the 220 is about 1/4 wave on 40m
where I was tuning up, so I think this was a factor in some
RF coupling to that wire which is run through a drop ceiling,
and is not shielded.
I plan on building a decoupling box in my spare time to have
an input that goes to the 220v outlet, perhaps a pi type filter
like I have seen in the tube linears from the old days.
Curious if anyone out there has built such an animal, or is there
something commercially you use?
I know hams that are into lots of power on 160m, often have problems
with RF in the house wiring, as the longer lengths are more resonant to that
band.
