It may well be the speaker, but it could also be a problem in your audio stages.  Try checking that out as well.  Connect another known-good speaker and see how that sounds, or drive that oval speaker from an external, known-good source.  I have a 1938 Westinghouse table radio with its original 5-inch speaker that still sounds good, and a 1941 Sears console with its original 8 inch speaker that is also OK.
