[Boatanchors] Question about Portables

Tell us what stations you listen to.  Maybe it has more to do with
modern radio transmitters and audio processing.  Maybe your tube sets
are designed for communications.  Not all tube sets are known for
great audio and it doesn't help if the matching speaker is used,
because often, it's just a speaker in a metal box.

Modern medium wave stations received via groundwave can sound
exceptionally good if they are running modern rigs and the latest
audio processing.  But some shortwave and medium wave stations sound
awful because they don't care.  I have a tube receiver that was
designed for audio fidelity and I use it with a pair of large bass
reflex cabinets and it sounds good IF I'm listening to a station that
transmits good audio.
