[Boatanchors] DX-40/VF-1

It has been many years since I had my DX-40 and the VF-1. But back in the
day, I tried other VFO's (the Knight comes to mind) and the VF-1 was the
best. It is simple to solid state the regulator section for better
regulation if that is an issue, but I would not sacrifice a VF-1 just to
make it solid state. As others have commented, try it 1st, then if you
still feel you need more stability, build a stand-alone digital VFO and
the requisite amplifier to reach the required drive level.
That wonderful green dial face of the VF-1 haunts me (in a good way)
today.

I'll third that! I picked up a VF-1 that had been solid stated (not working)
and I'm going to go back to the tube version.

Dave,
I agree with Rod, K0EQH, use the VF-1 as is with the DX-40, or at the very
least give it a good try before you mess with it. I have two VF-1s on the
air, one driving a Viking II and the other a Heath AT-1 with the Lew McCoy
conversion. Both work very well, no chirp or click and quite sufficiently
stable. I have a couple of Johnson 122 vfos driving a Viking I and an
Adventurer, and they have noticeably more drift than the VF-1, as does the
vfo in my Johnson Valiant. Heath also used the vf-1 in the DX-100, and mine
is more stable than the Johnson 122/Viking combination. Also, the DX-40
will probably need 10 volts or more out of a vfo to drive it properly, and
you may have to work a bit to get that much voltage out of a solid-state
conversion.
