I agree with Rod, K0EQH, use the VF-1 as is with the DX-40, or at the very least give it a good try before you mess with it.  I have two VF-1s on the air, one driving a Viking II and the other a Heath AT-1 with the Lew McCoy conversion.  Both work very well, no chirp or click and quite sufficiently stable.  I have a couple of Johnson 122 vfos driving a Viking I and an Adventurer, and they have noticeably more drift than the VF-1, as does the vfo in my Johnson Valiant.  Heath also used the vf-1 in the DX-100, and mine is more stable than the Johnson 122/Viking combination.   Also, the DX-40 will probably need 10 volts or more out of a vfo to drive it properly, and you may have to work a bit to get that much voltage out of a solid-state conversion.
