Hi Dave,

I only have used the VFO of the DX-100 and haven't used the "shorty" 
crystals at all, but FWIW I have used the HC-49/U crystals from N4ESS in 
all sorts of tube radio oscillator circuits with generally good 
results.   The exception being power crystal oscillators using something 
like a 6L6 which put lots of current through the crystal.    They've 
worked without any problem in "modern" novice type transmitters as well 
as boat radio conversions.
