Hi Dave,

Some have reported that it works for them and others have said it 
failed. If you need more power capability from the zener itself and not 
just from the dropping resistor you should probably use an adequate 
transistor biased by the zener circuit. There are some candidates that 
can handle several hundred volts and multiple watts. That is my choice. 
Is the current supplied to an interrupted load like morse keying?
