Hi,

A 455 kc IF can can be made to serve as a "BFO coil". I did that once 
upon a time. IF amplifiers will certainly oscillate if you don't use 
care about feedback. Some manufacturers used an oscillating IF amplifier 
for just that purpose. They can also be used in e regenerative amplifier 
set below the point of oscillation as a Q-multiplier.
