Dave,
I have found "Goo Gone" citrus cleaner works quite well to get rid
of gum from adhesives, and doesn't damage painted or plated surfaces.
Likewise, a cleaning product found in Dollar Tree stores "Awesome"
is the absolute best for removing nicotine from gear. But it can
remove lettering from some surfaces like plastic dials. Test
beforehand.
And, Simple Green is great to wash gear of dirt, grease, grime,
mouse droppings, urine, etc.
