My neighbor just got snagged by USPS trying to send a year's worth of
60's Popular Science magazines by Media Mail. Postal guy said it was
tagged at the local distribution center not at the local post office.
Evidently, for whatever reason, maybe just a spot check, they pulled it
aside and opened the package. For Media Mail they say, according to their
rules, they can do that. Evidently, magazines with advertisements,
regardless of the magazine's age, is a no-no for Media Mail shipment.
Neighbor got it all back in a plastic bag. I don't remember what he said
was written on the bag. No refund on the postage either. Because of
weight, he did had to send it in a flat-rate medium Priority Mail box.
Postal guy told the neighbor that he had seen a number of these media
mail packages in recent months being returned to customers in plastic
bags.
I guess it pays to read the rules. You then don't have to pay the postage
twice or have men in dark suits banging on your door.
