Misguided hams have been "modernizing" old gear for years. It's
almost always a bad idea. Back in the 1950s CQ published an article
on how to convert a receiver, an AR88 I believe, from octal to
miniature tubes. This basically trashed the receiver. It's one thing
to make minor improvements but a total re-design is nuts & misses the
point of running old gear. In other words, if that guy wants a solid
state set, there are plenty of solid state sets out there like the
Drake R8 and other high end receivers for him. He could buy a R390
front panel, put it on a box, put the R8 inside and drill holes in the
panel for the Drake controls and pretend he has a R390 that doesn't
need to warm up. My OPINION only.
