Randy posted a complete article on <The Mississippi Historical Radio and Broadcasting Society Attic Page>
about how we did our radio with the ins and outs. You can reach it through our comcents.com web site, go the the attic, look for Welcome to the workshop in the attic. It is the 4th bullet there.
We were both present in our kitchen when using the method explained on the web site.

He notes to be sure you do NOT use a gas oven or one with a pilot light..
I believe we had to practice patients as well.
A friend of mine said people sometimes use enamel paint and put lacquer over that and gets wrinkles (I haven't had any experience with that method and it may not be appropriate with a vintage piece.

Good luck on your project.

I know this won't help, but my SX-28 has a smooth, glossy, grey paint finish and its speaker has a very fine-grained grey crackle finish.  My SX-28A has that dried-mud finish.
