A wrinkle paint job is affected by the paint used, heat, humidity, and
paint thickness. Also, if you use a heat gun, the wrinkle increases
with the temperature of the surface as well as the time the heat gun is
applied. That means you will get different results if any of these
conditions change. There is skill involved too. That said, you can get
good results yourself, if you do some practice. It's best to practice
on some other surface such as roofing flashing or some other metal. The
test painting also allows you to better judge the thickness and amount
of heat to perform your wanted results. To get a fair amount of
wrinkle like on a Collins 75A4, you need to apply a fairly large amount
of paint on the cabinet. That means the paint can run if it is applied
to a vertical surface. For that reason I always paint a horizontal
surface. Do each side positioned horizontal. The wrinkle takes affect
fairly soon after paint is applied and heat put on the surface. Just be
cautious to not apply too much heat and always apple the paint and heat
evenly. Two last things, I said the paint wrinkles fairly early but
believe me when I tell you it is still very soft. If you touch it at
this point you will blemish the result. This paint dries very slowly.
It dries much slower then regular paint. Lastly, the primer or lack of
primer. Many companies like Collins did not prime the cabinet before
painting wrinkle paint. Primer has a tendency to retard WRINKLE. Thus
some companies did not use a primer. That is why a wrinkle paint job is
more prone to Bubble Up from rust as moisture over the years got behind
the paint and allowed it to rust. Use of a primer would be better to
prevent this but an increase of wrinkle paint would be needed to
counteract this situation. This is my experience wrinkle painting at home.
