    There is a pretty good tutorial on AM at:

    I found it easier to understand than the article at Wikepedia 
but that's worth reading too.
    In general, a shift in the carrier level when the amount of 
modulation is changed is called carrier shift and is due to some 
form of nonlinearity. Can be several things. Upward and downward 
modulation are explained in the tutorials but on an average 
responding RF meter the detected level remains constant. If it 
varies, either up or down it indicates some non-linearity 
somewhere, maybe in the detector.
    See if the tutorials are any help, I think they do a better 
job than I can but I am willing to help if I can .
