Well worth replacing the batteries where possible with an LM317 or similar
running off the rectified/filtered filament line to give a regulated 1.5
volts DC.

I have an original Heathkit IM-13 large meter VTVM I built in 1963 and
expect it would work just fine today, but I have two Fluke 77 DVMs, a really
nice Chinese DVM, plus a new Simpson 260 VOM.
I did remove the batteries in the Heathkit meter and the 260 that are used
for the Ohms function so no corrosions are in these meters.
The IM-13 is in almost perfect physical condition (I'd say a 9.5).
I did just dig the Heath box out of the closet and powered it up Meter
stayed pegged at bottom of the Volt and Amp scales.
Analog meters have capabilities that are absent in most digital meters.
Tuning for peaks or dips is far easier with analogs!
