Don't forget to add USAAF (US Army Air Forces) to the mix, which may be 
what the gentleman was recalling since that was the official title from 
1941 to 1947.

Memory confabulation is simply a part of the aging process - look it 
up.  Give the old folks a break.  For those who haven't yet experienced 
it, your time is coming...I can guarantee it.
