[Boatanchors] Mixer Troubleshooting Question For my Homebrew Superhet Novice Receiver

Scott:  Yes, that was my version you saw.
You should be able to hear the oscillator on a nearby SW broadcast receiver (easier if it has a BFO).   If you can hear it, and if sigs are getting through from the antenna terminal, you should be producing IF energy.   Then there is the crystal filter problem.  I had crystals just like yours.  Mine didn't work.  Check out my Electric Radio article.
My suspicions:  1) Could be a front end alignment problem -- That main cap is tuning BOTH the front end tuned circuit AND the VFO freq.   If they are not lined up, you won't hear much.
                           2) The crystal filter.
Keep at it.   It is good that you are thinking about this while drifting off to sleep.  The answer may come to you there.
Please keep me posted on this project.

HA HA no I know it wasn’t the April Fool article.. hi hi  I remember sitting in a lawn chair in the back yard in the summer of 1966 reading both the February issue for the Mighty Midget Transmitter, and the April issue with the MMMR.  I collected some of the parts in 1970, a few more in 1976, and now it’s 2021 so I figure I better build it while I still can.. hi hi

I wanted to build the Mighty Midget back in 1966 but today I’m not so much a fan of low power.  Think I could squeeze a 6146 in the cabinet??  Hi hi

Thanks for the link to the ‘don’t build the Mighty Midget’ page.  Yikes.  This statement stood out to me “The result is a transmitter that should not be duplicated and used on the air without considerable circuit modification”.  Wow..   I wonder if anyone ever built one.

No!  It was not an April Fool thing!    This was the receiver to go with the Mighty Midget transmitter.  That project was launched as part of some sort of contest -- see who could work all call districts with this thing first.

Many MMRX receivers were built.

The transmitter had problems: http://dpnwritings.nfshost.com/ej/mighty_midget/

I think Scott can get his going!
