I use a Johnson 122 vfo with my Viking II and a Heathkit VF-1 vfo with my Viking I, and I power them both from their respective rigs.  I have never had any problem running them this way.  They do not chirp at all.  A few minutes warm up is probably advised, but this is a lot less trouble than building a separate power supply and leaving them on all the time.  I also use a Johnson 122 vfo with my Adventurer, and I power it from the rig as well.  No promlem.  Keep it simple!
