I think I have seen the occasional recommendation to run the VFO 122 from a
remote power supply, rather than use the internal p/s of the Viking II (for
instance).
Why is this - what is the consequence for the VFO and/or transmitter?
I can see by its on line index there was an article a 122 power supply once in
Electric Radio, which of course I don't have.
I recently watched a video on the D Labs YouTube channel re. his project to
mount a Ranger/Valiant VFO into its own box with an accompanying power supply.
Simple enough it seems.
Pondering that I realized I have a couple options here re. powering my VFO 122
for my Viking II (to be re-capped etc) .. I have scrapped Ranger chassis with
transformer and choke if I was to build a robust over-kill p.s. from that. I
also have an old Heath HP 20 utility power supply for 300 v and 6.3 filament I
can re-cap. Or an Heath HP-23 that has 300 v, but which I would have to use a
separate 6.3 filament transformer with (have those I am sure in the junque
somewhere) since the HP23 has only 12 volt filament.
In any case, I think I have some options re. supply for the VFO 122, but I am
curious since I've yet to see real full details as to the limitations of using
the power out of the Viking II octal plug supply.
I do only do CW, if the juice required for running AM runs into the picture
somehow.
Oh, and while I do appreciate advice I can get here, I don't have real fear on
the Viking II project - I need to enumerate the caps I need for that and some
other likely projects so I can do a minimum-order threshold order. I do have a
friend near-ish me (couple hours drive) who I think I can do a walk thru of the
Viking II with..he is pretty adept at stuff like that so I figure if we do a
visual walk thru of what's what and what is of import and all that once the
Pandemic has subsided come end of summer (vaccinations in effect) a few beers
for him (less for me, I'm driving home..) I can allay some of the jitters and
get a decent working radio.. knock wood. Slow and steady at the helm, cap'n.
tnx
