I believe it was originally introduced by Mosley back in the late 40's
and was called a Type 301 plug. It was designed for terminating 300 ohm
Twin-lead line. Its pin to pin spacing was ideal for matching to the
typical FT-243 type crystal sockets, so many external VFO's used these
plugs on the end of the output cable. I acquired a bunch (parts bin and
bag) of new old stock of these plugs when Lafayette Radio shut down years
ago. I've been selling them at Hamfests for years. I figure by the year
2050 inventory should be near zero.
In the link below is typically what they look like although over the
years several manufacturers made similar types. I think even the Japanese
had a similar version.
