The other way, American Morse is the code used on wire
circuits in the U.S. and a few other places. It is the original
"Morse" code. Continental code, AKA International Morse is the
code used in Europe and for wireless. American Morse is
definitely legal for use on the air.
There are various stories about the development of
Continental Morse but the original version was developed in
Germany. Actually, there have been several codes most of which
had very limited useage. Bain code is one, the U.S.Navy had its
own code for a short time previous to WW-1. In the bad old days
operators at U.S. wireless stations had to be able to read both
American and Continental code because the stations were connected
via Western Union or Postal Telegraph circuits which ran American
Morse but talked to ships via Continental code. Ted McElroy wrote
of having to learn Contenental code when he went to work for RCA.
He knew American Morse because he was an experienced operator
with WU but had to learn the other. He became a speed champion in
both codes.
