FAA and USAF had linear amps (for AM) using ceramic tubes. They can be modified to work on 2m or 200-400+ MHz. They can be found as surplus although a bit rare.

Subject: [Boatanchors] VHF linear amp?
Ron,
The Johnson Viking 6 & 2 Thunderbolt used 4CX250Bs. These are fairly scarce amplifiers. I owned one, briefly. A friend pestered me, incessantly, until I sold it to him.
There may have been other commercially made 4CX250B amps for amateur use. I just can’t think of any. I have plenty of FM broadcast pulls, sockets, chimneys, etc. I used to replace the driver tubes, annually, even if they were still providing full drive to the PA. You could always hombrew an amp.

I've had a long desire to QRO a bit on
VHF 6, 2, or even UHF 70cm, and was wondering what type of boatanchor
amplifiers that use these tubes I might find? Ron VE8RT
