The chemical reaction that makes the cleaners work is the same chemical action that attacks dissimilar metal junctions. If you do not rinse well you get the green and sometimes blue deposits. I've been using scrubbing bubbles for at least 30 years with no ill effects yet.

Also, there are some cleaners, Formula 409 is one I think, that strip
off the thin shiny coating on bakelite. It's a good idea to have
some sacrificial surface to test on.
