The Unique Wire Tuners show up at hamfests sometimes and are a pretty
good bargain for parts. They usually go for around $100 but for that
you get a couple of nice shaft insulated couplers, bushings, an
insulated ceramic feedthrough, The Groth turns counter, aluminum
cabinet and an EFJ air variable cap and EFJ roller inductor. The
inductor is a plated wire inductor on a ceramic form rated for 5 amps
that is around 22 µH and often goes for $75 on eBay on its own. The
air variable is a smaller common cap used by Johnson and Hallicrafters
for an output loading cap in their 100 watt rigs. You can add some
fixed value doorknobs, rewire the tuner and have an okay L network
tuner for an inverted L or some other vertical. It will handle a
BC610, Viking 500 and lower power rigs FB.
