    I've used these but mostly use the larger solder sucker. Mine 
was not self cleaning, i've never had a desoldering tool that 
didn't need cleaning periodically. I also use solder wick for 
some things. Actually a combination, the sucker to get the bulk 
of the solder and wick for final cleaning and for circuit 
boards.  There are more sophisticated desoldering tools but they 
are expensive.
