[Boatanchors] replacing oil filled capacitor in Viking II ?

Brian, like so many things the PCB exposure was overblown to a great degree.
A brief encounter with the stuff is not fatal, it is not a poison. Should
the cap spring a leak, clean up the mess wearing rubber gloves and put them
in a plastic bag along with any other debris and take it to a disposal
location.
Here is the irony, this country set up a big howl about electronic waste
some years back. They instigated all sorts of rules for disposal and had
companies set up collection locations. Today the closest one is over 65
miles from me. I have trouble getting my local garage to accept used motor
oil that came from my lawn mowers and such. All the others have now closed.
So do use common sense about it. As for replacement that is an oil filled
capacitor and I bet over on the Johnson groups you can fid the exact
replacement if you want it, other wise use aluminum electrolytic capacitors
in series with equalizing resistors in its place.

Hi.
I recently picked up a Johnson Viking II. Owner is SK.
Looking inside it is pretty good top and bottom of chassis. No charred
marking
etc FWIW.
The only thing of consequence at first view is the oil filled capacitor.. 8
Mfd
100 vdc. This does show a little of what I think is seepage around the two
terminals and bit around the seal of the can at the top. Not migrated
anywhere
else, not onto the chassis below nor down the can. Just a thin brown line.
Most of what I can see on the internet re. cap replacement in the Viking II
is
re. the paper caps and electrolytics, which is straight-forward, but they
say
the oil filled is generally OK and are left alone (no one seems to mention
possibility of PCB?). Anyhow, if the oil filled cap should go as a caution
re.
what is seems visibly (I have not tested it re. capacitance nor resistance)
what can I replace it with that is modern at 8 mfd and 1000 VDC? I see no
reference to that generally re. the Viking II nor electronics in general?
Any ideas how to proceed or advisability etc
Hope to get this on the air by early 2021 if I can.. just need to order the
right stuff for it. Otherwise looks good and hope transformers etc. fall
into
place A-OK of course etc. As do we all with our BAs coming in!! Sacrilege of
sacrileges I will only use it on CW, not AM phone...
